Rostrum Voice of Youth is Australia’s premier public speaking competition for secondary students, and has operated since 1975.
Michael will travel to Brisbane to compete against other regional finalists on July 6.
“I’m surprised because I didn’t think I would be making it this far, so I see going there in itself just an added bonus,” he said.
Michael will deliver an eight-minute prepared speech as well as an impromptu speech on a provided topic with only 15 minutes to prepare and three to perform.
“My speech is ‘the last piece of the puzzle’,” he said.
“It’s about how, in life, people are driven by institutions like school and like uni that drive them into this space where they don’t consider all of the parts of the puzzle.
“At the end of the speech we are always searching for that last piece, that even successful people can decide nothing from still trying to get to that next level.”
If Michael wins at the Rostrum Voice of Youth state finals, he will head to Hobart on July 27 for the national leg of the competition.
Michael will also travel to Brisbane this week to compete in the MOST program for musically outstanding students, participating in the 2019 Creative Generation Excellence Awards in instrumental music.
An accomplished classical pianist, Michael will join nine other Pimlico students to participate in the event.
The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in instrumental music is a biennial event offering a residential extension program for up to 80 musically outstanding students from Queensland state secondary schools.
