Supercars drivers racing in the NTI Townsville 500 say they can’t wait for next month’s Townsville event that features a new format and the biggest off-track entertainment line-up in its history.
A Townsville first, Supercars will race on all three days of the event, with a 100-kilometre opening race on Friday, July 11, preceding 200-kilometre races on Saturday and Sunday.
Walkinshaw Andretti United driver Ryan Wood said the NTI Townsville 500 was a highlight of the Supercars series.
“It’s a top five on the calendar just because of the number of variables; it’s a super unique track, it’s like a hybrid between a street track and a normal track and then the weather is always different as well,” he said.
“Coming up to Townsville it’s always awesome to be in the hot weather, in the car it does get quite hot so sometimes you are dreading it but at the end of the day we are super lucky to be racing up here.”
The Kiwi said the Townsville crowd was always impressive.
“It’s really cool just because of how close they are to the track so we are super excited,” he said.
“The whole town and the community gets behind it so looking forward to feeling the atmosphere up here in Townsville.”
Following Friday’s Supercars race, Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Australia will host its first-ever Trans-Tasman Cup inside the Reid Park street circuit, where the best bull riders from Australia and New Zealand will battle it out on the dirt in the world’s first motorsport-bull riding crossover.
Among the expanded entertainment line-up is Summernats Goes Troppo demos, MotorEx, a performance by Dylan Wright and ADF displays.
Thomas Randle of Tickford Racing said the “epic track has a mix of everything”.
“You’ve got huge breaking zones at turn two, which is effectively turn one, it’s such a long run down to that corner so it’s really crucial to get a good start.”
The Victorian said Townsville City Council and Supercars had done a great job in ensuring the race remained the North Queensland city’s premiere annual event.
“Now it’s a bit faster over the weekend, we’ve got a race now on Friday, different formats across the weekend, it certainly puts more pressure on us, more pressure on the engineers so it’s going to be great to watch as well for the fans,” he said.
“Always love racing there, always put on a really good show and fingers crossed it’s a really great weekend for everyone.”
