NEURON scooters will start to work in more parts of the city, with more additional suburbs to be added to the inclusion zone.

Scooters will soon be able to be used in Rowes Bay, Belgian Gardens, West End, Currajong, Pimlico, Hyde Park, Hermit Park, Mysterton, South Townsville and Railway Estate after 18 months of Neuron operating in the CBD and North Ward.

Townsville City Council has voted to allow Neuron to expand its operation in hopes it will make the city more accessible and potentially take cars off the road. To ensure the service is not downgraded in the CBD and North Ward, Neuron will also be permitted to have an additional 200 scooters in the city, bringing the total to 450 from next month.

Mayor Jenny Hill said the increase in e-scooter operation was a vote of confidence for the city.

“Townsville is going from strength to strength and having a company like Neuron choosing to expand its investment in the city just goes to show that,” she said.

Neuron Mobility’s Australia and New Zealand head Richard Hannah said after reaching one million kilometres on the e-scooters, it was delighted to be extending Townsville’s existing riding area.

“E-scooters have become very popular in the city and we look forward to being able to reach more people in the suburbs, allowing them to travel even further on our e-scooters,” he said.

Neuron is also encouraging the community to take advantage of the scooters while fuel prices continue to climb.

“Already we are seeing our e-scooter trips continuing to increase in Townsville and we expect this number to continue if petrol prices continue to rise,” Mr Hannah said. “Over the last two weeks we’ve seen an uplift in demand and we are carefully watching how, and where, our e-scooters are being used and responding accordingly.”
