An 18-year-old has died after the electric scooter he was driving crashed on the Flinders Highway in Roseneath early this morning.

Police reported the Mount Louisa man crashed at 1am and was taken to Townsville University Hospital with significant injuries but has since deceased.

It was reproted a single-vehicle crash and the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing to investigate.

The tragedy comes during the same month that the government announced its landmark parliamentry inquiry into the use of personal mobility devices including e-scooters.

Transport and Main Roads Mnister Brent Mickelberg said all options for the inquiry were on the table, but it is understood e-scooters and e-bikes were unlikely to be banned.

“The increase in injuries and deaths we are seeing because of unsafe and unlawful riding cannot be ignored and I share the community’s concern,” he said.

The inquiry will run for almost a year and canvass everything from where scooters can be parked to restrctions on the import of commerical and private devices.

It is not suggested the 18-year-old Mount Louisa man was driving unlawfully.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
