They’re compassionate, driven and already making their mark — meet the students from across North Queensland who have been elected to lead their schools in 2025.

These young leaders are stepping up with purpose and passion, many destined to become the state’s future leaders with their sights set on changing the world.

NQ Weekend spoke to some of the region’s brightest minds, who shared what leadership means to them, what makes their schools stand out, and how they’ve been shaped by their communities.

These driven children are setting themselves up for exciting futures, many with their sights set on careers as the doctors, lawyers and teachers of tomorrow.

For Townsville Grammar School captain Oscar Caniato, the key to his success has been the encouragement to grow and take risks.

“TGS has encouraged me to challenge myself, step outside my comfort zone and build confidence,” he says.

His co-captain Zarah Moller agrees. “We are provided with an environment to create lifelong friends and memories.”

At Kirwan High, Nylani Namai says the school’s belief in her potential helped her grow.

“I’ve never had to question whether there would be people to support me.”

Meanwhile, St Patrick’s College Townsville captains Meg Burbidge and Saskia Tresch describe their school as “a community where girls support one another, lasting friendships are formed, and laughter is ever-present”.

From Townsville to Charters Towers, these leaders are already proving that the future is in capable hands.

Their goals are bold, their values clear and their stories inspiring — and it’s only just the beginning.

Here our next generation of leaders tell us what makes their school excellent and how they’ve been empowered to take on leadership roles.

KIRWAN STATE HIGH SCHOOL

Nylani Namai

Kirwan High has always been supportive of my passions and who I am as an individual. I’ve never had to question whether there would be people to support me. This has allowed me to harbour courage and explore many of my interests. Whether in sports or academics, Kirwan High has believed in my abilities. Kirwan High consistently sets a standard – one that enables me to achieve above and beyond, and not many institutions offer that. If you had told me in Year 9 that I’d be the person I am today, I wouldn’t have believed you.

Throughout my time at Kirwan, I have participated in the National Futsal Championships, inter-school soccer, the Bill Turner Cup, inter-school swimming carnivals and the GRIP Leadership Conference, just to name a few. Every opportunity at Kirwan is fully supported by teachers striving to motivate students to achieve.

TEC-NQ

Matthew Munro,
Year 12 P-Tech

My school is excellent because they not only offer unique and supportive training in all areas of the trade industry, but they help you get a foot forward with getting an apprenticeship. Tec-NQ is excellent in a way no other school can compare, in Year 10 you get the opportunity to try every trade. For example, you may want to be a plumber in Year 10 but after trying the different trades, you can change your final trade decision. Tec-NQ is a safe and inclusive environment where you can also meet new people and easily make new friends. This is why my school is excellent.

NORTHERN BEACHES STATE SCHOOL

Montana Owen, School Captain

My school is truly a special place, largely thanks to the amazing teachers and staff who make it such a supportive and inspiring environment. Each teacher is dedicated to helping students reach their full potential, offering guidance both inside and outside the classroom. Beyond the classrooms, the extra-curricular programs including IXL Academic, Sport, Art and STEM makes every student feel like they have a place. The block sport, Theatre Restaurant and the newly established clubs for this year, once again supported by our teachers, demonstrates the number of opportunities for students to feel part of the team. Mr Frankling and the staff are really making a recognisable difference here at Northern Beaches.

BLACKHEATH & THORNBURGH COLLEGE

Sascha Young,
College Captain

To me Blackheath & Thornburgh College is a phenomenal school. It has so much to offer kids from all over the country and further abroad. We are a very diverse school and are a very proud school community. Being able to interact with so many different people and learn about so many different cultures is really incredible. You make so many awesome friends that will last a lifetime – not to mention how many different extra-curricular activities you are able to participate in at the school.

Jayden Pacey,

There are so many reasons why Blackheath & Thornburgh College is a great school, but I think they can all be linked back to the school’s friendly community. Although we are growing in numbers every year, the school maintains its friendly vibe and characteristics that help shape us into the best versions of ourselves. The staff here are always supportive, whether it be an interschool event or learning in the classroom. The same can be said for my peers, who are always full of school spirit. You can definitely say that I am surrounded by great people.

The teachers are very nice, they have a fun energy – which makes learning fun. They work hard to keep the students motivated to achieve. They care about us and are supportive. Our school is somewhere we feel safe. We are lucky to have lots of wonderful facilities like our playgrounds, library and a tuckshop that sells healthy food and treats. The students are always friendly and we have the Joey’s Way, which all of them follow. This means we are respectful, responsible, proud, we serve others and we are safe at school.
