A man who police allege stabbed a woman with a pair of scissors multiple times before trying to clean the blood off them has applied for bail after he was arrested and accused of the disturbing attack.

Matthias Eli Z Oui appeared via video link in Townsville Magistrates Court on Thursday morning and said he was not guilty of inflicting the violent assault on the woman.

The 32-year-old’s defence lawyer Tim Fedorowytsch instructed by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Legal Services said his client who will contest the charges of wounding and assault occasioning bodily harm would make an application to be released from custody.

Mr Oui’s application was opposed by the prosecution with the police prosecutor Amanda Stephens telling the court police arrived at the Vincent home on March 9 to the man with a cut to his head standing at the front of the house.

“Police observed a blood trail and followed it to the downstairs area where they found a woman bleeding from three wounds,” Ms Stephens said.

The woman had been stabbed in the back and shoulders and had swelling to her face after being punched, police alleged.

It was said the man sustained a “superficial laceration” to his skull.

“He stabbed her three times with scissors,” Ms Stephens said.

She said the woman ran away from the man jumping over a wired fence, and he attempted to clean the blood off the scissors in the kitchen sink before he collapsed in the front yard.

“This is violent offending and given the nature and seriousness of the offending I submit he would be a risk of reoffending,” Ms Stephens alleged.

The prosecutor said it was witnesses who reported the details to police as the man and woman were both intoxicated and wouldn’t provide details on how the other was injured.

Mr Oui’s lawyer said he could be released on bail and given conditions such as a residential address that would see him live with his parents on Palm Island, as well as have no contact with the woman.

Mr Fedorowytsch also emphasised his concerns with the trial not taking place for a long time, as it would be likely held next year due to the length of time it takes for a brief of evidence to be received along with the indictment process.

Magistrate Susan Warrington said she was not satisfied that those conditions would reduce the risk of harm to the woman if the man were to be released and rejected his bail.

The charges were adjourned to May 22.
