A man who police allege was behind an entire Far North Queensland suburb being shut down for hours when he allegedly shot another man has had his charged mentioned in court.

Mathew William Bionda was charged after he allegedly shot a 43-year-old in the leg when their two vehicles collided in Edge Hill, Cairns in March this year.

The 35-year-old Varsity Lakes man was charged with acts intended to maim or disfigure, contravening an order about electronic information and possessing drugs after police spent three days looking for him.

In Townsville Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning, defence lawyer Nick Douglas from Legal Aid Queensland appeared on the man’s behalf.

He said the defence had received a partial brief of evidence last week and that arrangements were being made to see Mr Bionda in person who is currently remanded in Capricornia Prison to seek further instructions.

Magistrate Susan Warrington adjourned the matter to October 19 for a committal mention in Townsville court.

No pleas have been entered.
