Malakai Thomas Walden Cleland charged after alleged violence at Townsville watch-house

A Townsville man who was hit with fresh charges after an alleged violent incident in the Townsville watch-house has applied for bail.

A Hermit Park man has faced court after he allegedly became violent in the watch-house on Tuesday.

Police allege Malakai Thomas Walden Cleland, 28, resisted officers about 1.50pm while being placed in a cell.

He allegedly assaulted an officer causing minor lacerations and visible scratches to the officer’s forearm.

Cleland was charged with serious assault of police causing bodily harm, wilful damage, obstructing a police officer and obstructing a watch-house officer.

Also charged with two counts of contravention of a domestic violence order and entering dwelling with intent by break at night.

He appeared in Townsville Magistrates Court on Wednesday via videolink to apply for bail.

Defence lawyer Miranda Greenwood said he was in a show cause position, where the presumption of bail was against him.

She said he had a limited criminal history, suffered from learning difficulties and underlying mental issues.

These would require a psychiatric assessment to diagnose.

Magistrate Viviana Keegan didn’t believe there was enough evidence to substantiate his claim and regarded the strength of the evidence against him as strong — likely resulting in a term of imprisonment.

She refused bail without needing to hear the prosecutor speaking against bail being granted.

He will next appear in court on October 14.
