2025 is right around the corner, meaning thousands of locals across the region will be enjoying new year’s celebrations.

But pet-owners are being reminded to take care of their furry friends this new year.

Fireworks are one of the leading causes of pet escapes, with hundreds of dogs each year scaling backyard fences due to anxiety caused by end of year celebrations.

It also comes as dozens of families across Townsville received animals for Christmas, including cats and dogs.

Acting mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said residents can take small steps to give their pet the best new year’s experience.

“Cats and dogs often feel more secure in a small space, so pop them in a small, well ventilated room, like the laundry or bathroom, or in a crate if they’re crate trained,” Ms Greaney said.

“If you stay calm, your pet is more likely to stay calm, so make sure you’re role-modelling relaxed behaviour for your animal.”

“Always ensure that your pet has its colour on with ID, and your microchip details are up to date, just in case your pet escapes during the fireworks.”

“This will assist vets and Council’s team to reunite you with your pet as soon as possible.”

Anyone who loses a pet over Christmas or New Years can contact the Animal Care and Adoption Centre at 0457 769 362.
