A prisoner has been punished in court after he doused a prison guard’s face with his own body fluid at the Townsville Correctional Centre.

A prisoner at Townsville Correctional Centre who threw his own urine at a guard’s face has had his time behind bars extended.

A court has heard how on May 11, a correctional officer attending to evening meals visited Leroy Williams’ cell at 4.20pm.

Police prosecutor Cody Rowe said Williams complied with an instruction to step away from the door and remain where he was while the officer collected rubbish from the doorway.

“While the (officer) did this, (Williams) reached down into a food container at his feet and scooped liquid from a container before flicking the liquid directly at the victim,” Mr Rowe said.

“(It) made contact with the victim’s face, hat, polo shirt, glasses and radio. The liquid appeared and smelled like urine.”

The victim immediately shut the door and reported the matter to police.

Magistrate Peter Smid said, “gee, that’s not nice is it”, to which Mr Rowe responded, “it’s not, especially when that person’s going about their duties of employment”.

Appearing via video link in the Townsville Magistrates Court on Wednesday, Williams pleaded guilty to the serious assault of a corrective services officer.

Given that this offence occurred while serving a term of imprisonment, Mr Rowe any punishment should be served cumulatively.

Defence lawyer Darryn Casson said the reason his client gave for carrying out the attack was because he’d previously been “grabbed harshly in his cell for a non-compliance”.

To allow for the four month backlog in parole applications, he urged the magistrate to set a parole eligibility date.

Magistrate Smid sentenced Williams to six months imprisonment, with a parole eligibility date set for September 7.
