Katter Australian Party renews calls for castle law by launching another petition

KAP will once again introduce a parliamentary petition for the introduction of Castle Law to give homeowners more freedom when protecting themselves from intruders.

The Katter Australian Party is launching another parliamentary petition trying to get castle law adopted by the state government.

Hinchinbrook MP, Nick Dametto, said last year’s petition raised 40,000 signatures in a five week period.

“Queenslanders are calling for this, we want to make sure Queenslanders have their voices heard,” he said.

“Also there is a strong message being sent back to the state government, the LNP is now steering the state this time, and it’s now up to them to give us the answer on whether or not they’ll support the calls of Queenslanders.”

Mr Dametto said that if castle law is implemented in Queensland, the easiest path would be for the state government to adopt the law in their own right, create their own legislation around that, and put that through the house.

“That would give homeowners, and business owners, and people the rights here in Queensland to defend themselves if faced with an intruder,” he said.

“If the state government doesn’t adopt castle law, the Katter’s Australian Party will be forced to reintroduce our legislation into the house.”

The Hinchinbrook MP and the rest of the KAP hopes that by raising the petition this time around, they can quadruple the number of signatures.

“So nearly four months this petition will run, we would hope that Queenslanders will make their voice heard, because that is the only way to change the opinion of government, through political pressure and political pain,” Mr Dametto said.

“And if the state government can see where the numbers lie on this, it would be an easy political decision for them to make, to back castle law.”
