Car thieves terrorise people on Burt St soccer fields

TOWNSVILLE sports players were forced to scatter after two stolen vehicles entered their soccer field, drove at people and destroyed their equipment on Wednesday.

A witness, who did not want to be named, was at the Burt St soccer fields in Aitkenvale. He filmed with his phone when the vehicles entered the field and drove dangerously about 4.30pm.

The video captured a silver Toyota Corolla and a grey Volkswagen Tiguan wagon driving at a player and doing burnouts on the field.

A person could be seen hanging out of the window of the Corolla.

The witness said at least four kids were involved in the incident which lasted about five minutes.

“They drove at people playing soccer including children and ran over their training equipment, destroying items,” he said.

Police arrived at the scene about 10 minutes after the vehicles left.

A Queensland Police spokesman said the stolen vehicles fled the scene when they noticed the police approaching.

Police have begun an investigation to determine where the vehicles came from and who was on board.

As someone who has had their house robbed and a car stolen over a year ago, the witness expressed his frustration with seeing crimes like this still happening.

“These offenders have been driving around in those two cars for the majority of the day which just goes to show that the enforcement in which we trust isn’t doing enough or most likely, aren’t able to do enough,” he said.

“I woke up to people breaking into my house less than a month ago as well. To see it happening often, I have trouble sleeping most nights.”
