The iconic Strand restaurant C Bar has reopened after $2m in renovations to transform it into a ‘world class facility’. Find out what’s changed.

Townsville's C Bar reopens after extensive renovations

Just in time for the busy Christmas party season, the iconic Strand restaurant C Bar has reopened after extensive renovations to extend and weatherproof its outdoor dining, add a function space, and upgrade its interior.

After being built on the Strand’s Gregory St Headland 21 years ago, the Townsville City Council-owned building hosting the C Bar was ready for a $2 million upgrade to broaden its offering and capacity, while also positioning it for a busy future.

C Bar owner Allan Pike said the business ceased trading in late September and over the past 10 weeks, had undergone significant upgrades to its exterior and interior, which has boosted their dining capacity to 165.

Since reopening on Wednesday, Mr Pike said visitors had been awe-struck by the building’s transformation into a “world class facility to rival anything that’s in Townsville over the water”.

“Basically everything has been changed except for the actual original shell of the C Bar,” Mr Pike said.

“The whole front deck has gone out another 2m out over the water, and between us and Longboards, it’s gone out another 6m to create a separate, fully-functional function room … with its own AV and TV for slide shows.

“We can use it for weddings, wakes, birthdays, and they can hire it out just separately … we’ll be able to seat 62 or stand up about 90 (guests).”

He said it was now a “full weather venue”, with a big new sign, a front entrance awning going halfway down the footpath, and an outdoor dining area improved by a roof, ceiling fans, state-of-the-art AV equipment, and sun-blocking blinds.

Mr Pike has recruited a “Top Gun head chef from Western Australia” to take their menu to the next level, and aims to attract more wedding celebrations, leveraging the new function room and stunning panoramic view.

Ideally positioned for the New Year’s Eve fireworks, C Bar looks forward to welcoming guests for an unforgettable evening of canapes washed down with a drinks package.
