Queensland’s top ‘T’ towns are now linked by a direct Bonza flight, allowing workers and tourists to flow between Townsville and Toowoomba.
Often mistaken for each other by southerners, Townsville and Toowoomba are both massive regional cities with a combined population bigger than Geelong and on par with Newcastle.
The Toowoomba connection will regularly fly alongside the Townsville-Sunshine Coast and Townsville-Rockhampton flights.
Toowoomba Wellcamp airport co-owner Denis Wagner was on-board the first ever flight.
“Bonza is going to revolutionise regional air travel,” Mr Wagner said from the Townsville tarmac.
“On board with us was a broad range of people travelling for work, recreation or to see family.”
Toowoomba’s airport was privately built by the Wagner family and received no government funding, making it a rarity.
For Toowoomba residents the direct flight means they can save big-time on parking costs and avoid a Brisbane trip.
Bonza CEO Tim Jordan said we can expect to see Toowoomba residents flying into Townsville to watch NRL Cowboys games and enjoy Magnetic Island.
Toowoomba has less to offer tourists, but it serves as the gateway to the Darling Downs for people with family in the region.
The service will fly twice a week - on Sundays and Wednesdays - with fares starting at $69 one way.
