Townsville sports bar opens for drinks, meals near stadium

A sports bar and restaurant has opened in one of Townsville’s best sites near Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Townsville in focus for Australian business

A SPORTS bar and restaurant has opened in Honeycombe's Central development in Little Fletcher St opposite the city’s new stadium.

OBJ’s Sports Bar opened for trade on Tuesday and will operate daily from 11am to 11pm.

It has taken a prime spot in the Central Village cinema complex which has sat idle since the former Hog’s Breath restaurant closed at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in March last year. OBJ’s Sports Bar operations manager Maurice Shanahan said they would have a restaurant and bar and gaming, although TAB and Keno were not expected to be operating until after Christmas and poker machines were planned to be installed from March next year.

Mr Shanahan said it was the first of its kind, backed by Gold Coast hospitality operators, and appealing to a sports mad Townsville public.

“It was really a case of opportunity. For instance, the location next to the (stadium) grounds,” Mr Shanahan said.

“None of us are Townsville locals, we are from the Gold Coast, although we have had previous businesses that have been here in the past. This is an opportunity to expand.”

He said one of the ventures they had been involved in was Outback Jack’s.

But gaming would be new for them and was expected to support the revenue of the sports bar to provide customers with a better deal in the bar and restaurant.

Mr Shanahan said the restaurant would offer top grade 20-hour slow-roasted steaks and fresh fish.

He said they’d had a soft opening for local tradies who had raved about the quality of the steaks.

“We are really just catering to what the local people want,” Mr Shanahan said.
