Rain has robbed Far North cricket fans of a potentially thrilling Barrier Reef Big Bash match between the Designer First Homes Dare Devils and Twomey Schriber Thunder on Friday night.

The second match of the new Twenty20 tournament was shaping up well until heavy rain forced the Cairns Cricket Association to call the match off on Friday afternoon.

Organiser Kev Maher said the association had no choice but to abandon the match.

“We were going alright but I’m afraid we’ve had to call it,” he told the Cairns Post.

“The wicket was alright just after midday, the outfield was drying out, we got the mower over it — everything.

“Then, down came the big downpour — the wicket was well covered, of course — but then there was another big one at about 2pm.

“The outfield’s waterlogged, so that’s the end of that.

“The ground crew did a great job, everything was on track to play up until the second downpour.”

He said the match would be rescheduled for a later date.

“I’ve just got to have a look at the draw and availability and see if there’s an afternoon or a night where we can replay the game,” he said.

Maher said staging the tournament at this time of the year was always going to be a risk.

“Certainly the intention is not to play it at this time next season,” he said.

“We’ll look at a different time.”

The next Barrier Reef Big Bash match is scheduled for Friday, February 19, with the Dare Devils to take on the Halpin Hurricanes at Griffiths Park at 6.30pm.
