Ten children have been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after their school bus collided with a truck and flipped on its side, trapping multiple kids.

Emergency services were called to a collision between a bus and a truck at the intersection of Exford Rd and Murphys Rd in Eynesbury in Melbourne's west, at about 3.40pm on Tuesday.

At this stage investigators believe there were 45 child passengers travelling on the bus before the accident.

Some of the injured were dragged from the wreckage by quick-acting passers-by who witnessed the impact.

Within minutes dozens of SES, paramedic and police personnel were on site working desperately to free the children as anxious parents and local teachers watched on.

"It's still a very serious incident"

Victoria Police Superintendent Michael Cruse said it was “very lucky” none of the nearly 50 primary school children on board had been killed.

“The scene is obviously a really significant scene, the bus has suffered significant damage and it’s also overturned,” he said.

"So it’s very fortunate that the incident isn’t more serious, but I must stress it’s still a very serious incident.”

He said police believe the bus was trying to turn right into Murphys Rd just after leaving Exford Primary School at Eynesbury before the truck collided with its rear wheel.

Ambulance Victoria says the 10 children have been taken to hospital, along with an adult and three other child in a stable condition.

"There was tears and emotion"

A mother whose child was on the bus spoke about the horror of having her child involved.

“We raced down here, there was tears and emotion, (my daughter) was frightened, she has scratches, blood on her hands,” Nicole Kirk told 9 News.

“She was more concerned about her friends; she had her seatbelt on and she was fine. “We are one of the lucky ones.”

The male driver of the bus suffered minor injuries and the male driver of the truck is currently assisting police with enquiries.

Detectives from Major Collision Investigation unit have been notified and are attending the scene.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, with dashcam footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
