Sergeant Patterson said the passenger was declared deceased at the scene and the driver was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for surgery in a critical but stable condition.

He said a third boy, 15, was also in the back seat of the car but only suffered minor injuries.

Sergeant Patterson said police understood the car was not stolen but may have been “borrowed” from a family member.

He said traffic diversions were in place as of 6am and the Stuart Hwy was blocked heading south at the Virginia Rd intersection.

Sergeant Patterson said he expected the diversions would be in place until midmorning while the Major Crash Investigations Unit assessed the scene.

The boy’s death takes the road toll to 29 for the year.

At the same time last year it was 49.
