The heartbreak of having their tournament cancelled has turned to joy as the state’s youngest representative stars take to the court to finish the Basketball Queensland Under-12 State Championships in Logan.
LOGAN THUNDER DEF GC WAVES 67-47 (Boys Div 1 Grand Final)
The Logan Thunder are the 2021 Basketball Queensland Under-12 Boys Division 1 state champions after a dominant day which was capped-off with a 20-point victory over rivals the Gold Coast Waves in the grand final at Cornubia Park Sports Centre.
Returning to the court after Queensland’s most recent Covid lockdown forced the postponement of the finals late last month, the Thunder and Waves both had to earn their way into the championship game through touch semi-final match ups.
But each team did it easy early in the day as Logan beat the Southern Districts Spartans and Gold Coast demolished the Brisbane Capitals.
The results meant both teams set up a rematch of the SQJBC grand final, which the Thunder won to take home the gold medal, but the Waves went into the decider with confidence after beating Logan in their last clash in the pool stages of state championships.
But this Logan team was a different one compared to the group who lost in the pool stages as the Thunder ran out to an early double-digit lead in the first half as big man Trae Dombroski led from the front.
Gold Coast managed to put together several runs in the second half, with Waves star Cooper McGregor trying to put his team on his back.
But the Thunder proved too good in the end and ended up running away with the win and the championship in front of their home fans.
Dombroski led the Thunder with 22 points while Lila Raven also had 14.
McGregor was the leading scorer for the game with 23.

Some teams had already earned their place in the State Championship grand finals with Northside and Townsville qualifying for the Girls Division 1 decider, while others were preparing for a do-or-die semi-final battle when Queensland’s most recent Covid lockdown forced the tournament to be postponed on June 29.

But Basketball Queensland found a way to reschedule most of the games and we have all the action live from court three at the Cornubia Park Sports Complex as part of NewsCorp’s coverage of the sport.

Games will tip-off at 8am but the day will be headlined by the two Boys Division 1 semi-finals, the following grand final, as well as the Girls Division 1 bronze medal game.
