Wombat Wonder: Tasmania’s 3D Billboard Brings Australia’s Iconic Creature to Life

In some Asian countries, 3D billboards are marking the next wave of advertising, drawing eyes to lifelike depictions of animals or products. Where Australia’s first 3D billboard is bringing an iconic animal to life.

Tasmania is now home to the first 3D billboard in the country.

Document Management Tasmania Managing director Keirran Downham said he was compelled to try and bring the technology to the country after visiting Japan on a business trip.

“What it does is it enables you to bring a brand to life because the images jump off the screen, they become literally 3D,” Mr Downham said.

“In Asia the concept of 3D marketing was basically a way to get you to look at my billboard rather than the other guys’ billboard.”

In an Australian-first DMTas is proud to unveil a cutting-edge 3D display technology developed in collaboration with global tech leader Fujifilm — right here in Tasmania.

The new billboard depicts a “cute as cute” wombat and facts about Bonorong’s work in Tasmania.

Mr Downham has been working with Bonorong since director Greg Irons first bought the business.

He said businesses have a social responsibility and it was a privilege to help support organisations such as Bonorong.

“Not everyone really understands all the wonderful things that they do and they fight for,” Mr Downham said.

He said Mr Irons was “passion personified” and the basis of the partnership was to help keep Bonorong sustainable.

“I can’t do anything as cool as he does, but how I can help him so he can do more of it was the foundation of our partnership,” Mr Downham said.

Mr Irons said Mr Downham was a “long term wildlife fan always trying to help us where he can”.

The wombat is a world first 3D billboard and Mr Downham’s team put more than 250 hours of design time into the creature so he can dig, waddle and scratch just like a real wombat.

Mr Downham expects the wombat to be the first of many 3D billboards to be deployed in Australia.

He also lifts weights, gets abducted by aliens and can be seen in the Document Management Tasmania Print Division 46 Brisbane Street Hobart.
