US Ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy has visited Triabunna to observe operations at Sea Forest, a groundbreaking business using seaweed to sequester carbon and combat climate change.

The daughter of former US president John F. Kennedy, the ambassador is understood to have been keen to see the company’s work up close, with climate action being a priority for the Biden administration and for Ms Kennedy personally.

Sea Forest CEO Sam Elsom hosted Ms Kennedy on Friday, giving her a tour of the laboratory, hatchery, and seaweed processing facility. The pair also embarked on a boat ride to Mercury Bay, where they examined seaweed being farmed in the ocean.

“It was certainly a special occasion to have Caroline Kennedy visit Triabunna and see first-hand the work of the Sea Forest team,” Mr Elsom said.

“Her visit is an example of the growing international interest in what we’re doing and how Australian science and determination can offer practical solutions to a very real global problem.”

Sea Forest, which also has operations at Swansea, produces a feed supplement made from asparagopsis seaweed, which, when fed to livestock, can reduce their methane emissions by up to 98 per cent.

The company is the only Australian finalist in this year’s Earthshot Prize, which is awarded for contributions to environmentalism. It was launched in 2020 by Prince William and David Attenborough.

The name of the prize is inspired by President Kennedy’s famous Moonshot speech, in which he announced his administration’s intention to put humans on the moon.

Sea Forest is nominated in the Fix Our Climate category and is in the running for $1.9 million AUD in prize money.

The awards ceremony takes place in Singapore on November 7.
