Police say the driver of a Subaru is on the run after allegedly striking a pedestrian in northern Tasmania.

Hunt for driver after alleged hit and run

May 28, 11.20am: A driver is believed to be on the run after allegedly striking a pedestrian in a Launceston suburb this morning, police say.

Officers said they were investigating a crash on Theherne St at Mayfield where a person was reportedly struck by a vehicle around 9.45am.

Police reported the person was taken to hospital and was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers said they found the silver Subaru Liberty at Rocherlea involved in the incident after it did not stop at the scene of the crash.

The car has been seized by police.

Investigation are ongoing to locate the driver, police say.

Anyone with information that would assist the investigation is asked to phone police on 131 444 and quote ESCAD 104-28052025.

Updated midday: A quick thinking community member saved the lives of an elderly couple after their vehicle plunged into the water at the Bruny Island ferry terminal.

Early investigations suggest the silver Mitsubishi which was on the loading ramp, drove into the water from the dock as the ferry was leaving the terminal around 10am this morning, police say.

Two people were inside the car at the time it entered the water.

Senior Sergeant Peter Borish thanked the person who promptly dived into the water, smashed a window on the vehicle and assisted the elderly couple to safely exit the car and water.

“Police also thank Tassal for their assistance at the scene, which included the use of a boat crane on water,” Senior Sergeant Borish said.

He said the vehicle had been removed from the water and the area was rendered safe.

People have been asked to delay non-urgent travel to and from the island.

Police confirmed an investigation was being conducted and WorkSafe notified.

They also confirmed the SeaLink crew member was receiving full support and was co-operating with local police as part of theongoing investigation.

May 26, 11.20am: Police have responded to reports a single vehicle plunged into the water near the Bruny Island ferry terminal.

Officers said two people were inside the vehicle at the time and both had safely made it to shore.

The incident happened at Roberts Point, North Bruny.

Police said there were no injuries reported at this stage.
