Sports Minister Nic Street will take a brief hiatus from his ministerial duties, as he continues to struggle with his mental health.

Mr Street opened up about what he had been going through on Wednesday, announcing he’d be stepping down for several weeks.

“As many would know, I have had challenges with my mental health for a number of years,” Mr Street said.

“In recent weeks I have increasingly struggled and am currently working on my recovery with all the appropriate supports.

“I will be taking a period of leave to ensure I have the time and space to recover.

“It is my intention to return to my Ministerial duties in the coming weeks.”

Mr Street said it was important to be open about mental health.

“During my time in politics, I have not shied away from talking about mental health issues openly and honestly to help break down the stigma attached to them,” he said.

“I have chosen to use my situation as an opportunity to be upfront with Tasmanians, and normalise this issue, just like any other health issue.”

Mr Street said during his time off, deputy Premier Michael Ferguson would become acting Finance Minister, Roger Jaesnch would be acting Local Government Minister and Nick Duigan would step in to temporarily handle the Sports and Events ministry.
