New speed cameras with upgraded “enforcement technology” have been installed on the Tasman Bridge and are expected to be operational “in the coming weeks”, the Department of State Growth says.
The devices, manufactured by traffic safety solutions company Sensys Gatso Australia, will replace existing cameras that are “at end of life”.
One of the new cameras is located on the eastern side of the bridge and the other is on the western side.
“These devices are a trial of upgraded speed enforcement technology which will monitor all lanes of traffic, and multiple vehicles at once on the Tasman Bridge,” a State Growth spokesman said.
“The new speed camera devices are expected to commence enforcement in the coming weeks.”
The state government began rolling out mobile speed cameras on Tasmania’s roads in 2022, complementing the ageing network of fixed cameras managed by Tasmania Police, which are unable to detect mobile phone and seatbelt offences.
Sensys Gatso was contracted by State Growth to maintain and operate the mobile speed cameras, which can be moved across the state as needed. Some of the cameras are in the form of highly visible trailers, while others are concealed in cars.
