A man who told a woman he should “kill” her and left her with a bleeding nose after assaulting her at home told police he was “against” domestic violence.

Appearing from custody in the dock of the Supreme Court of Tasmania, Jayson Mark Cronly pleaded guilty to three counts of assault.

The court was told that Cronly and the woman had been living together, but had separated when tensions escalated on July 13, 2021.

After leaving to spend a night at his father’s house, the woman woke at midnight to the sounds of slamming in the kitchen, and found Cronly drunk in the room.

He sprayed verbal abuse at her, before grabbing and stepping on her mobile phone.

The woman took Cronly’s phone and ran to another room, calling Triple-0 – but Cronly followed and took back his mobile.

He grabbed the woman’s hair and pulled her head backwards before going outside and then returning to confront the woman again.

The court was told that while the woman was on the floor, Cronly again pulled her hair, kicked the left side of her body, and punched her in the face multiple times.

The woman was bleeding from her nose.

Then, while she was pushed against a doorframe, Cronly placed both his hands around her neck and applied pressure – leaving the woman unable to breathe.

“(Her) next memory is waking up on the floor and (Cronly) saying ‘I should kill you’,” a Crown prosecutor said.

The woman ran to her car where Cronly punched her driver side window, smashing the glass.

Cronly later resisted arrest, and while at hospital hurled verbal abuse at officers.

He spat phlegm at one constable, which landed on his chest and face.

Speaking to police the next day, he said he’d had four beers and a “couple” of whisky shots but could not remember the events of the night.

He told police the black out was part of his mental disorder, that he had not “laid hands” on the woman, and that he was “very against that”.

He said he had only ever touched the woman in a “loving, romantic way”, and claimed the woman had driven at him and that the cut on his arm had happened when he “jumped out of the way”.

He further told police he’d had a “bunch of benzos” that night.

Justice Gregory Geason acknowledged Cronly’s steps taken to address his mental health conditions, and his personal history.

Cronly, who has spent six months in custody, was sentenced to 14 months jail.

His jail term will be suspended in April, after serving a total of eight months behind bars.
