There was a mid morning rush to secure Dark Mofo tickets after they went on sale on monday, with many left missing out on popular events which were quick to sell out.

More than 12,000 tickets across the winter festival were snapped up within the first hour after priority access tickets for subscribers went on sale at 10am.

Within five hours, more than 30,000 tickets had been sold.

At 11am there were more than 7000 people still waiting in the queue to buy tickets to various events

The first to sell out was the Saturday session of the popular nightclub event, Night Mass, with most tickets snapped up in the priority presale.

General access tickets for the event held at the Hanging Garden precinct went on sale at noon, with the both the Friday and Saturday instalments selling out.

Two of the four Borderlands sessions were also sold out by the afternoon.

The event, which is held at the Theatre Royal studio and MAC2 is described as a “microfestival” and features electronic and experimental music.

By 3pm several other events including the TSO’s performance of Angel’s Lament, both Chernobyl shows, one Reaching show, Chelsea Wolfe + Emma Ruth Rundle, Kucka and Everywhen had sold out.

But there could be hope for those who have missed out, with festival organisers urging festival goers to join waitlists to be notified of further ticket releases, instead of relying on scalpers.

“We strongly advise against purchasing a ticket from a third party—and if you do, we cannot guarantee that the ticket will be valid,” Dark Mofo Creative Director Leigh Carmichael said. “All tickets have a unique barcode that can only be used once, and can be cancelled if a scalper attempts to sell tickets for a profit.”

A performance by the Kid LAROI, who is well known for his collaboration with Justin Beiber on the song Stay, was expected to sell out quickly, but tickets were still available in the late afternoon on Monday.

Dark Mofo organisers predicted demand for the festival was up 50 per cent on the 2019 event, which was the last festival to run before the pandemic hit.

Tickets for several other events are still on sale, with the full list on the Dark Mofo website.

Over the 12 day program, more than 100 artists from 30 countries will be featured across Hobart.

‘I love everything I make’: The Kid LAROI and Dark Mofo join forces

Parents of Tasmanian teens can expect to be pestered today with the announcement of a global teenage superstar’s Hobart performance.

Arguably Australia’s hottest musical export, The Kid LAROI, will be bringing his global chart-toppers to this year’s Dark Mofo.

Hailing from Waterloo in Sydney’s southern suburbs, The Kid LAROI’s rise to superstardom went into hyperspeed in 2018 after developing a close friendship and working relationship with late world-renowned rapper, Juice WRLD.

The Kid LAROI supported the rapper on his Australian tour before moving to Los Angeles to further learn from his mentor. But the music world was rocked by the sudden death of Juice WRLD in December 2019, less than a week after his 21st birthday.

His major break came with the 2021 hit ‘STAY’ featuring Justin Bieber, which topped charts the world over and has been streamed 1.7 billion times on Spotify.

At the ripe age of just 18, the young Aussie musical juggernaut shows no signs of slowing as it’s announced he will be on the bill for this winter’s Dark Mofo festivities.

Fresh off the back of a global tour and a Grammy nomination, the young indigenous artist spoke of his experience with global success.

“It’s really what I’ve always imagined … I always knew it was bigger than that,” he said.

“I love everything I make. I take music super seriously, and I look at it as art.”

Dark Mofo Creative Director Leigh Carmichael hoped the announcement would end the days of world-class acts overlooking Hobart as an Australian tour stop.

“We are extremely pleased to announce The Kid LAROI is part of this year’s Dark Mofo program,” he said.

“The Kid LAROI was just recently nominated for a Grammy Award, and we think his inclusion in the festival will resonate with young Tasmanians who often miss out on the big international touring artists because they don’t usually travel to Hobart.

“We’re also looking forward to utilising the recently renovated MyState Arena.

“It’s now a world-class facility and if this show is successful we look forward to bringing other artists of this calibre down in the future.”

Dark Mofo organisers have today revealed full the “Resurrection” themed program for Hobart’s winter solstice festival, taking place from 8–22 June 2022.

“This year’s festival is a celebration of coming together again, to listen to some music, see some art and eat at the Winter Feast,” Mr Carmichael said.

“As the cultural world re-emerges from the darkness of cancellations and lockdowns, we are all experiencing a rebirth, of sorts. The forced isolation gave rise to a re-evaluation of what matters, to new ideas, new dreams.

“We’ve assembled over 100 artists from 30 countries, from Australia to Belgium to Kyrgyzstan, and look forward to bringing them to Hobart this winter.

“We’re just grateful to be able to present a full festival program again.”

The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra will perform Angel’s Lament, centred around Arvo Pärt’s Symphony No. 4, with string, percussion, and harp, extending a hand in solidarity to those currently affected by Russia’s war actions.

ART | WEEK TWO

A special industrial facility will be the venue for a live performance of the haunting score of TV series Chernobyl, performed by composer Hildur Guðnadóttir with Chris Watson and Sam Slater. All proceeds will be donated to Voices of Children, supporting assistance to Ukrainian children and families.

SIGNATURE EVENTS

Dark Mofo’s debaucherous costume party makes a welcome return, this year titled the Blue Rose Ball. The highly-sought after ballot-ticketed event invites guests to dress for dreaming. ‘It doesn’t get any bluer.’—Gordon Cole (Twin Peaks).

This winter features the return of Dark Mofo’s intimate ritual Memorial, in which locals can bear their loved one’s ashes to the river and have them placed inside a handcrafted firework for the whole community to witness.

The sumptuous banquet known as the Winter Feast will rise again on the Hobart waterfront, to liberate the shackles of normality and unleash the primal. The Feast’s stallholders will be announced in May. The Ogoh-ogoh returns with the festival’s Balinese-inspired community ritual to purge and then burn our fears, this year taking form as a giant Tamanian Masked Owl.

And finally, the Nude Solstice Swim returns like the sun after the longest night, offering renewal and resurrection to those courageous enough to participate.
