SENATOR Jacqui Lambie’s office manager has put up her hand to join her boss in the Senate in a move which could put the Liberals’ third Tasmanian seat in danger.

Tammy Tyrell has worked for Senator Lambie for seven years.

The 50-year-old has now decided it is the right time to stand as a Jacqui Lambie Network candidate and, if successful, “give Tasmania more clout in the Upper House”.

“If the JLN we get another seat imagine the things we can get delivered for Tasmania,” Senator Lambie said.

“Independents have the balance of power. Imagine if Tasmania had the two in the Senate. That would give this little state a lot of clout.”

Ms Tyrrell was born and bred in Ulverstone and said she was a “real person living in a real place”.

“I have not gone to university but been educated by life,” she said.

“I have been on Centrelink benefits and know what that is like. My mum died before she could receive the public surgery she needed and I also have experience in the mental health and aged care sectors.”

Ms Tyrell’s campaign will be officially launched at a function in Ulverstone on Saturday.

Senator Lambie will then start looking at Lower House candidate options for the upcoming Federal elections.

Three Liberal Senators (Eric Abetz, Jono Duniam and Wendy Askew), two Labor (Helen Polly and Anne Urquhart) and Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson are all recontesting their seats.

Liberals Claire Chandler and Richard Colbeck, Labor’s Catryna Bilyk and Carol Brown, JNL’s Jacqui Lambie and Greens Senator Nick McKim are safe until 2025.

Liberal stalwart Eric Abetz has been relegated to the likely unwinnable No. 3 spot on the Liberal Senate ticket.

Senator Duniam, who once worked for Senator Abetz, won the No. 1 spot with Senator Askew given the No. 2 position on the ballot.

Political analysts are already predicting that while Senator Lambie is not up for re-election, the running of another JLN candidate could pose the biggest threat to the Liberals’ chances of winning a third seat.

The Australian Greens are expected to announce running mates for Senator Whish-Wilson soon.

Senators are elected for six-year terms, half of them being elected every three years.

There are 12 senators from each of the six states and, since 1975, two from each of the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory, making in all 76 senators.

Currently the balance is 30 Liberal, 26 ALP, one independent, two One Nation, one Jacqui Lambie Network and two Centre Alliance.
