Why was Saudi royal murdered and burned in Gold Coast bushland?

SULTAN Alamri lived a hard and fast life on the Gold Coast before his charred body was found dumped in remote bushland.

The 30-year-old suspected drug dealer, who claimed to be a member of the Saudi Arabian royal family, was found brutally murdered on October 17 in 2012.

It is one of the only unsolved murders on the books at the Coomera CIB, with Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Procter revealing it is believed the murderers have fled overseas.

The mysterious case began when the body of a man was found by bushwalkers at Austinville.

The body wad so badly burnt that initially police did not know it was Mr Alamri, who had been missing since October 6.

A fake Gucci belt buckle and jewellery were found with the remains, prompting police to release images to the public, appealing for anyone who recognised the items to come forward.

No one did and weeks later DNA technology was able to confirm the body was in fact Mr Alamri.

Mr Alamri was a Saudi national who moved to the Gold Coast in 2009, he was believed to be travelling on a false passport and used false documents to rent a luxury Broadbeach Waters apartment.

It is understood he paid his rent and utilities in cash and claimed to neighbours to be a member of the Saudi royal family.

It was his rent being eight days late that first raised the alarm something was wrong.

When detectives made the link between Mr Alamri’s disappearance and the “John Doe” in the hinterland they launched a large-scale investigation.

It was made clear from the beginning that police were treating the murder as drug-related.

A month before Mr Alamri’s body was found another Saudi national was shot in the leg in an incident police believed could be connected.

Mr Alamri’s live-in girlfriend has been a long-running person of interest in the case.

She, and Mr Alamri’s car, could both not be found after his body was identified.

The maroon Toyota was found about three weeks later, abandoned in Ventura Rd at Mermaid Beach, but his girlfriend has never been found.

It is believed she, and two possible accomplices, fled overseas not long after the grisly murder.

As the investigation progressed detectives searched a unit on Paradise Island in Surfers Paradise.

The occupants of the unit were never charged and police remained tight-lipped about the target of their search at the time.

It has since been revealed Mr Alamri may have been killed on Paradise Island, his body then disposed of in a remote area, which was deliberately lit to look like an accidental bushfire.

Det Sen-Sgt Procter said the investigation was difficult from the beginning.

“Alamri didn’t have any family on the Coast and his girlfriend, that he lived with, could not be found — she still hasn’t been to this day,” he said.

“It is one of two unsolved murders in the Coomera district, we have a good clear up rate and would like to see this one solved too.

“We believe there could be up to three offenders and that they may have fled the country.

“The case is still open and we welcome any information anyone may have.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
