The Gold Coast has Queensland’s only known cases of community transmission and has been the epicentre of coronavirus since the beginning. But authorities say we are only just getting started.
Now with 175 confirmed cases, the city saw its first positive patient on January 29, after a Chinese visitor, 44, from Wuhan was rushed from his Broadbeach hotel to the Gold Coast University Hospital.
Since, 921 have been diagnosed in Queensland, four have died, eight are in intensive care and 54,440 have been tested for the virus.
Despite unprecedented restrictions on society including now closing the state border, Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said this was only the beginning.
FIRST AUSTRALIAN DOCTOR TO TREAT COVID-19 A GOLD COAST LOCAL
Health officials are now bracing for a pandemic peak in July, August or September.
“We are not really at the start of it in Queensland, we are just getting those small numbers each day,” Dr Young said yesterday. “It has been up and down so we are really containing it in Queensland, at this stage.
“That is our aim, to contain it as long as we possibly can but eventually we won’t be able to contain it - and then we will start to see that increase.”
“If we continue that with all of our strategies in place, we believe that will delay the pandemic spreading through Queensland – and when the peak happens.”
Dr Young assured Queenslanders there were many advantages to being a decentralised state.
“That’s often a disadvantage but in this case, it’s very, very much an advantage, which means that we won’t see the peak of the impact of this virus across the whole state at the same time,” she said.
She was echoed by State Disaster Co-ordinator Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski: “Things are not necessarily going to get any easier, and our community may well expect we have to do more stricter controls as time goes on.
“It will take a long time to get over this.”
There were no new cases confirmed for Tweed yesterday, which has a total of 12.

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

Since March 1, the Gold Coast’s case growth has been an average bump of around 4.7 new cases a day.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said: “We’re not even on the curve yet” but added extensive modelling and preparations were taking place.
Ms Palaszczuk said how bad the crisis became in Queensland would depend on community transmission of the virus.

Ms Palaszczuk said “one positive” was that Queensland “hopefully” wouldn’t experience an onslaught of flu cases because of the strict social distancing measures.
The Queensland Government Friday also confirmed that a number of health care workers statewide had contracted the virus, but within community settings.
