Coronavirus 2020: Charlie Robinson, Spida Everitt, Apollo Jackson and Liz Cantor’s life in ‘iso’

AGAINST the sad backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic, we are discovering – or rediscovering – the pleasure of spending time with family, baking, watching TV and life without gym. Current mood?

It’s certainly a frightening time, and extremely hard for jobs and families at home. But I’ve been seeing so many positives. Parents that usually work so many hours are now spending time with their kids, families cooking meals, gardening and growing veggies, relationships that were falling away purely through no time together are now back on track through nothing but being today, these are priceless moments. I honestly feel things weren’t perfect the way they were before. We took so much for granted and relied to heavily on others for food and living. COVID-19 has forced us back to basics and will always make us appreciate being with and hugging family and friends.

Who are you self-isolating with?

Happily self isolating with Liam and Kensington. Kensington is enjoying daddy being home so much with all the car racing cancelled.

What are you enjoying doing at home?

Moving in! We’d literally just moved when this all happened so we’re unpacking as best you can with a 15 month old who loves to be right beside us every moment.

How would you describe your quarantine fashion sense?

Being pregnant I’m getting bigger by the day, so happily wearing loose fitting summer dresses in this warm autumn weather, we are making an effort to get dressed everyday and haven’t had a PJ day yet! I also loved the GC’s Sonia Stradiotto challenge of getting glam around the house, I put on one of her couture gowns and watered the lawn.

What do you miss wearing?

My high heels. But with less than 3 months to go till our baby girl arrives my ankles and legs are really happy about it!

What’s the first thing you want to do once we’re out of lockdown?

See my family in NSW – that is the hardest part with boarders closed. Kensington and I were flying to them every couple of weeks while Liam was racing so to not see them for a few months is really heavy on my heart and theirs not seeing her.

What is your favourite takeaway or favourite meal to cook at the moment?

I’m loving baking! Carrot cake and chocolate muffins – everything naughty for an afternoon treat. Pancakes are another favourite. For dinner pumpkin risotto or duck for Liam and Kensington now they share everything – it’s really cute.

Do you miss the gym? What are you doing instead?

Being pregnant I wasn’t going to the gym I’m more of a yoga at home while pregnant girl. But carrying my 13kg bundle of love Kensy in my arms most of the day is definitely keeping me fit! Liam is running 15km so he’s keeping fit enough for the both of us

Favourite thing to watch on TV right now?

I must confess I was loving watching MAFS. Now that’s over I’m back to my online Hypnobirthing course. Liam watches cool movies and I’m up late learning to relax about birth, it’s a good balance between us!

What is your favourite memory of 2020 thus far?

Turning 39-years-old on March 8 was right before this all happened! We celebrated all together at a restaurant and lots of laughs, at the time that was normal but now the memory of being with them all, eating out and laughing and hugging seems like an amazing dream!

Hasn’t changed … although I am loving wearing less make up

What do you miss wearing?

I do miss wearing some of my dresses so we have improvised with a couple of dress-ups at home

We have been experimenting more with the cooking but my favourite go to is a great pizza from the local Italian on a Friday night

Comfort first definitely

Favourite thing to watch on TV right now? Community!

It’s now in Netflix so we’re re-watching it.

What’s your favourite memory of this year?

Right before lockdown we got to go to Bali. We went snorkelling and swam alongside giant manta rays over there. It felt like I was dreaming it was so cool.

JACKIE CROSS

Cross Promotions

Billy and Jackie Cross in The Dome for Magic Millions at GCTC. Picture: Regina King

Current mood?

Someone else needs to unstack the dishwasher.

Who are you self-isolating with?

My family – hubby Billy, sons Josh & Nick, Carlos (our super happy dog) and Josh’s girlfriend Stacey (thank goodness for another woman in the house).

What are you enjoying doing at home?

We actually love the lack of routine – not needing to be somewhere. Life can be so busy, so having time to enjoy the simple things has been the bright side. We’ve enjoyed watching the sunsets – and the Gold Coast weather is stunning. Plus the family is in a ferocious Monopoly deal battle every night – which has been very competitive.

How would you describe your quarantine fashion sense?

Most definitely lacking! I’m on a gym wear, bikini, pyjamas rotation.

What do you miss wearing?

I miss getting dressed to go somewhere, anywhere. And I think my shoes think I’ve moved out.

What’s the first thing you want to do once we’re out of lockdown?

Never take anything for granted again. I actually can’t wait to get back to the office – I love my team, and I miss seeing them every day. We’re going to have a BBQ for all our friends – with lots of margaritas.

What is your favourite takeaway or favourite meal to cook at the moment?

We’ve really enjoyed having more time to cook – the kitchen is a great place to congregate with a cocktail and prep dinner. We’ve also been supporting our local faves with some delicious pasta from Gemelli & Alfresco.

Do you miss the gym? What are you doing instead?

We are still managing to stay active – plenty of park walks. We are lucky to have a small gym set-up at home, so we make the most of that, especially after the ridiculous number of Easter eggs we consumed last week. Its been great for the mental side of things as well.

Favourite thing to watch on TV right now?

Billy’s watching Ozark, and I’m just starting Bloom.

What is your favourite memory of 2020 thus far?

So many good memories so far – we had a friend’s wedding in Bali in February. It was only 3 days away but it was relaxing, fun and very special.

SCOTTY COUCHMAN

Hit Network's Scotty Couchman and family.

Current mood?

Grateful. It’s a scary time but my family and I have our health, the local community are looking out for each other, and the future’s looking bright.

Who are you self-isolating with?

My wife and (almost) one year old son.

What are you enjoying doing at home?

It’s given me a lot of time to explore and discover new music, something I’m very passionate about. Also, nobody can tell if you’re having a cheeky midday nap.

How would you describe your quarantine fashion sense?

Chic, comfy, pant-less.

What do you miss wearing?

Nothing really … my wardrobe is literally in the next room.

What’s the first thing you want to do once we’re out of lockdown?

Take my wife, son, and dog to a big open park and watch some live acoustic music on a Sunday afternoon.

What is your favourite takeaway or favourite meal to cook at the moment?

Large Margherita Pizza from Alfresco in Surfers, they’re doing delivery now and oh my god I can’t stop.

Do you miss the gym? What are you doing instead?

Yes! I didn’t think I would but I do! The team at F45 Bundall make working out so much fun, turns out without them I sit on the couch and eat pizza all day long.

Favourite thing to watch on TV right now?

We just finished ‘Unorthodox’ on Netflix which was intense but very interesting. House staples are ‘Schitt’s Creek’ and ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’.

What is your favourite memory of 2020 thus far?

I find it very heartwarming to see people do all they can to connect in our current world of disconnect. From musicians and artists inviting us into their homes for a performance from their living rooms, to friends and family teaching their grandparents how to use Skype and Zoom to video call and check in on the people they love. It’s nice to see people all around the globe looking out for one another while we try and get through this together.

Current mood?

Happy/Content

Who are you self-isolating with?

I live with two roommates at home and see my boyfriend two or three times a week.

What are you enjoying doing at home?

It’s all about being creative – just because we are in lockdown doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. We had a Mexican themed isolation party of four people – my boyfriend, his roommate, me and one other guest as per the rules – with a pinata, margaritas, dress ups, Easter bunnies and indoor dancing.

How would you describe your quarantine fashion sense?

It’s a miss mash of frilly dresses, pyjamas and activewear. The new dresses I bought for socialising will remain on the hangers unfortunately.

What do you miss wearing?

Heels!

What’s the first thing you want to do once we’re out of lockdown?

Have a huge party with all my besties! And go for a drive and see my family in Noosa/Sydney

What is your favourite takeaway or favourite meal to cook at the moment?

That’s an easy one – Zambreros! Otherwise I don’t mind a nice salmon dish cooked by my boyfriend – I’m hopeless.

Do you miss the gym? What are you doing instead?

I’m more of a pilates girl and yes I miss it! Instead I’m doing barre (online of course) with Xtend Barre Burleigh (pronounced Barry if you’re Scomo) ballet to keep fit in the studio.

Favourite thing to watch on TV right now?

Tiger King/Family Guy/Keeping Up With The Kardashians

What is your favourite memory of 2020 thus far?

The night my boyfriend and I stayed at Ecoasis in Murwillumbah. We shared a magical evening together where he cooked me dinner and breakfast, had the best retreat in the mountainous rainforest with views of Mt. Warning and officially became boyfriend/girlfriend. I would relive that day over and over again.

JOSH HALE

Writer, Director, Producer

Director Josh Hale. Picture: Glenn Hampson
Director Josh Hale. Picture: Glenn Hampson

Current mood?

I’m maintaining a very upbeat and positive attitude about the situation we all find ourselves in. Times are not great right now, but they will pass. I am looking for the positives within the chaos. Like most people I miss my normal life, I have lost my fair share since the isolation and lockdowns began, but I have my family and we all have our health. So I build from there. Staying home, watching movies, playing boardgames, doing puzzles. It certainly could be worse. So I’m maintaining a positive mindset and trying to use the time as a blessing and not a curse.

Drawing, painting, cleaning out the garage. I believe life is all about perspective and the outlook we choose to have – I choose positivity. My thoughts go out to all those affected by this virus, also to the amazing doctors, nurses, supermarket workers and all the people keeping us together during this pandemic. They are true blue heroes.

Who are you self isolating with?

My wife Tegan and our two cats, Lennon and Loomis.

What are you enjoying doing at home?

I have been putting the finishing touches on my latest feature film, House of Inequity which was due to have its world premiere in late April as an Official Selection for the Gold Coast Film Festival, although the festival was cancelled due to the pandemic. We are simply postponed until the world returns to a somewhat normal state and the cinemas open again. Just putting the last touches on the film now. I have also been using the time to write my next film.

How would you describe your quarantine fashion sense?

Pyjamas and slides is my current day-to-day today uniform.

What do you miss wearing?

I don’t really miss wearing anything in particular. I’m a year round jeans and T-shirt kind of guy. Maybe shoes if I had to pick something. It would be nice to dress up nice and attend some social events.

What’s the first thing you want to do once we are out of lockdown?

I would like to go to a nice restaurant and the cinema with my wife Tegan. Followed closely by a little party with all of our close friends.

What is your favourite takeaway or favourite meal to cook at the moment?

I’m not much of a cook but together we make some mean Chicken Street Tacos. I make a fresh pick de gallo from scratch and Tegan has a special method to shred the chicken. Team work to make the dream work. Tegan recently started making my favourite soup, Tortilla Soup, and it’s incredible. Normally I have to wait till I am in the US to eat it but she learned a recipe and began making it since being in isolation. Its amazing.

Do you miss the gym? What are you doing instead?

I miss the gym really bad. I get personally trained with the amazing ladies at The Strength Collective in Burleigh at their private gym/facility. Since the lockdown they have been doing online classes, which has been awesome. Not quite the same as the fantastic atmosphere they provide in person but it’s doing the trick until I can get back to face-to-face contact with those legends. I know a bunch of actor friends work with them to get screen ready. What they are doing for us online has been clutch. Pure legends. I also do a lot of walking. I have a 4km track around a lake near our house we hit almost every evening.

Favourite thing to watch on TV right now?

I self program everyday probably like most people. I have a massive movie library (thanks to JB Hi Fi) and we have all the streaming services. So we are covered in the entertainment department. I support the industry I am a part of. I have been watching some amazing films. Currently, I’m block watching Boardwalk Empire – I have never seen it.

What is your favourite memory of 2020 thus far?

It's a 3 way tie. I was in the US – Las Vegas & San Francisco – finishing the original music score for House of Inequity in January and February, which was an amazing work trip. House of Inequity being an Official Selection at the Gold Coast Film Festival was incredible news. Even though it was cancelled, it was still a great honour to be included in their program. Such a fantastic festival for our local film scene in Queensland and Australia and getting to be in isolation with my family in good health. Nothing beats some solid time together.

Liz Cantor and her son Kit, 3, checking out the waterslides at Helensvale’s Big 4 Park. Picture: Jerad Williams

Current mood?

I’m actually feeling really grateful. I live in a home with running water, we’re fortunate enough to have a TV and access to the news and latest information. While I’ve lost a lot of work, I’m able to continue my job presenting the weather and lotto draws. My family is healthy. We live walking distance from the beach and I am able to swim in the saltwater with my children every morning. I’ve been running through my suburb noticing regular smiling faces and when surfing taking in the sky and how unusually quite it is! With two toddlers I’m so used to plane spotting and pointing out boats and ships. It’s been very surreal to see both the sky and ocean empty. I feel grateful that here in Australia we are still able to access the outdoors.

Who are you self-isolating with?

Husband Ryan, Kit, 3, Fin, 1 and our dog Bear.

What are you enjoying doing at home?

Drinking a lot more wine and eating a lot more chocolate than normal. I don’t know if it’s the boredom buster, or just a necessity after getting a 3-year-old and 1-year-old to bed! Playing Monopoly with Ryan in the evenings and getting to know my neighbours better from a far. I’ve been surfing out the front of my place daily and it’s also been nice to chat to the same faces out at my break. I feel like an upside to these hard times has been really getting to know my local community – at a distance of course!

How would you describe your quarantine fashion sense?

Hombodii PJs, swimmers, a hat and zinc. The end!

What do you miss wearing?

I was looking forward to the winter racing carnivals – so I must confess I’m missing the trackside fashion. But I’m glad we’re more focused on those in scrubs at the moment.

What’s the first thing you want to do once we’re out of lockdown?

Go and see my parents in Noosa and then go skiing with the family in Queenstown as we had booked and planned. Get back to weekly trail rides with Tegan Harrison on her retired racehorses – I’m really missing them.

What is your favourite takeaway or favourite meal to cook at the moment?

I’m a crap housewife. But I’m trying to use this time to better my cooking skills from Vegemite toast to scrambled eggs on toast. I’ll tell you what I really miss – picking up fruit and vegetables on my travels and not feeling concerned about who else has touched them. I feel that burden at the moment. I’m making a continued effort to buy takeaway coffees at our local Hide and Seek, curries from Basil Thai. Keeping our local cafes and restaurant scene alive, while living on a stricter budget!

Do you miss the gym? What are you doing instead?

That’s been a change that’s really affected me. If I’m not at work I have my bub’s with me and on those days we all go to Fitness First in the morning. They have a fantastic kids play area with the most amazing ladies who show the kids so much love. I didn’t realise how much having an hour to myself to do a yoga class or HITT class, while knowing my kids were having a good time, set me up in a good headspace for the day. Knowing I’d done something for myself really enabled me to parent selflessly! Even though I’m working out at home with apps on my phone, with the kids around and in my care, I’m hyper aware of them. I don’t get that mental break of being able to switch off, until the evenings when they’re asleep and then I’m wrecked.

Favourite thing to watch on TV right now?

Outlander – my all time fave novels. Loving Money Heist on Netflix’s. I enjoy watching subtitles as it makes me put my phone down and focus.

What is your favourite memory of 2020 thus far?

Too many with my kids to mention so I’ll say when I got the phone call that Creek to Coast and newly renamed ‘Weekender’ were coming back to Channel 7. I have a soft spot for Creek to Coast. It was my first gig in TV and this year is my 15th year with the show. For me the cast and crew are family, and the viewers are my mates!

A delightful combo of lethargic, chilled and confused.

Who are you self-isolating with?

Testosterone x 3. My husband and two sons.

What are you enjoying doing at home?

I’m reorganising cupboards and utensil draws and becoming quite the isolation-minimalist. I’m also enjoying restyling our back patio and teaching my Great Dane how to jump on the trampoline.

How would you describe your quarantine fashion sense?

Low-fi, no makeup, no shoes, elasticated waistbands, old T-shirts. I’m a vision.

What do you miss wearing?

Platters and grazing boards. Can’t get enough of ash brie, fig and apricot crackers and a handful of prosciutto.

Do you miss the gym? What are you doing instead?

Favourite thing to watch on TV right now?

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Louis Theroux documentaries on Stan, waiting for season 2 of Afterlife on Netflix and LegoMasters.

What is your favourite memory of 2020 thus far?

I feel calm. We are very, very lucky to live in Australia.

Who are you self-isolating with?

I am self isolating at home, just me and my dogs.

What are you enjoying doing at home?

After a month at home so far and most of that time gardening, I reckon I’m one bromeliad away from entering the Chelsea Flower Show.

How would you describe your quarantine fashion sense?

I still have to go into my shop every couple of days to post of the purchases from my online boutique, so I haven’t let my sartorial senses go just yet.

What’s the first thing you want to do once we’re out of lockdown?

When this lockdown ends, I know it’s simple but I can’t wait for the Runaway Bay League’s Club to be open so I can go and have Friday afternoon beers and a catch up with my cousins Chris and Murray like we always used to do.

What is your favourite takeaway or favourite meal to cook at the moment?

I have been sticking to BBQ’s and salad to keep at eye on the calories.

Do you miss the gym? What are you doing instead?

I really miss the gym! Even though I have been keeping active with pilates and circuit training, I miss the interaction with everyone at BLK Performance Centre. They are like a family.

Favourite thing to watch on TV right now?

There is a quirky English crime comedy on the ABC I love called Death in Paradise.

What is your favourite memory of 2020 thus far?

Good Lord, can I take that question on notice?

What do you miss wearing?

Nothing!

What’s the first thing you want to do once we’re out of lockdown?

Go to the beach!

What is your favourite takeaway or favourite meal to cook at the moment?

We have only had one takeaway Chinese so far and Spida is the chef in our house! Last nights slow cooked rotisserie lamb was epic!

Do you miss the gym? What are you doing instead?

I never go to the gym normally! But we have one at home so it's a novelty for me to be working out!

Karina Irby has 1.1M followers on Instagram and has a bikini business called Moana Bikini. She is empowering young people to ditch the filters and be real.

Current mood?

Overwhelmed, yet motivated and hopeful!

Who are you self-isolating with?

Thankfully, Moana Bikini HQ is still operational, after a few little tweaks in our office space to ensure we’re obliging by all the relevant social-distancing measures.

Aside from heading to work, there’s been a lot of downtime at home with my fiance Ryan and our puppies, Billie and Barnie. Forced relaxation is never a bad thing though.

What are you enjoying doing at home?

I have really enjoyed trying to do ’nothing’ and switch my brain off, which is actually hard to do! Cleaning, cooking, exercising and some serious couch time.

How would you describe your quarantine fashion sense?

Typically the same as my normal fashion sense … comfort!

Baggie trackies and sweats, activewear and pyjamas have been a serious go-to.

What do you miss wearing?

I am typically a bit of a homebody and don’t usually have much time to do much else aside from go from home to the office and back again!

But that said, I was just thinking last night that I have missed Ryan and I’s date-nights and getting dressed up to go out for a nice meal or catch a movie.

It definitely feels weird not knowing when doing something as simple as that is possible again.

What is your favourite takeaway or favourite meal to cook at the moment?

Food has been a real joy of late, especially looking forward to something fun and amazing.

Pepe Italia in Palm Beach have been making pre-boxed, homemade pizza kits with their delicious ingredients and Ryan and I have been ensuring to order these a least once or twice and week and collect on our way home. It’s lots of fun rolling out your own dough and building your own pizza from scratch and if ‘feels’ a little less naughty than some other takeaway options available.

Do you miss the gym? What are you doing instead?

Definitely missing the gym! But I probably mostly miss being a part of a private or small group training environment when you have that little bit of extra motivation from those around you. The self-motivation element is probably the toughest part! Ryan and I have set up a little home gym at home with some basic equipment which is proving to be super valuable and helpful.

The tough part is scheduling workouts into your day and ensuring you have the motivation and commitment to complete them as hard and intense as you normally would.

I don’t think people should feel guilty if they’re not working out as hard or as consistently as they normally would. There is so much going on in everyone’s lives right now – lots of stresses, confusion and worry. Sometimes it’s nice to just take a break and give yourself a break.

Favourite thing to watch on TV right now?

Well, like everyone else in the world, we raced through Tiger King!

I am a sucker for some trashy reality TV though, so I have been catching up on Sietsa Key, Vanderpump Rules and The Kardashians.

I have also been really enjoying Dare Me Netflix. This downtime hasn’t been great for my TikTok addiction either and I have been spending a lot of time on there, laughing!

10. What is your favourite memory of 2020 thus far?

I really just enjoyed switching off, hanging out at home with Ryan and the puppies, drinking coffee, eating too much and exercising in the sunshine.

I guess that just helps to show us all, there are always small joys to brighten our days until things return to normal.
