MY government has committed to a Master Plan for the Spit because we recognise that it is an asset without parallel for the Gold Coast community.
Like many Queenslanders, I have been visiting the Spit since I was a young child.
I want to see the Spit preserved and restored.
Done right, it has the potential to be for the Gold Coast what Central Park is for New York — a destination in its own right, an oasis of natural calm in the middle of the high-energy excitement.

That’s why my Government has committed to ensuring that local planning schemes are followed and that a three-storey height limit remains in place.
The community are telling me that they want to see the Spit’s unique environment preserved for future generations with improved accessibility, public amenities and facilities.
I am also interested in proposals from local businesses to draw more tourists and support more local jobs.
The day I announced the masterplanning process for The Spit last year, I went to Peter’s Fish Market for their legendary fish and chips.
As I sat looking across the Broadwater, owner Peter shared with me his ideas for what could be done to improve The Spit.
It’s Peter and all other Gold Coast locals who are best placed to contribute to a vision for the future of this wonderful location.

The first Spit masterplan workshop occurred in April, with workshops continuing over the remainder of this year.
I encourage the local community and businesses to attend and have their say on the future of this magnificent Queensland asset.
The masterplan is expected to be finalised next year.
