A middle-aged woman charged with numerous historic child sex offences has faced court for the first time – and won a bid to keep her identity a secret.
Standing silently in the dock of the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning, the woman, in her 60s, heard new alleged victims had come forward since her arrest in May this year.
The woman, who is understood to be an employee at one of the universities in SA, has been charged with having unlawful sexual intercourse with boys as young as 12.
Prosecutors told the court they would require 14 weeks to go through the evidence, including statements of “multiple” alleged victims in the matter.
On May 15, the woman was arrested by Detectives from SA Police Special Crime Investigation Section and charged with three counts of unlawful sexual intercourse, and one charge of maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship with a child (retrospective).
Danni Stephens, for the woman, asked the court for a suppression order, prohibiting the publication of the woman’s name or image, which was granted by Magistrate Aaron Almeida despite arguments from the media.
Ms Stephens said publication of her client’s identity would cause her undue hardship, because she had recently lost a family member.
“Her mental health is quite frail and there are concerns for her at the moment,” Ms Stephens said.
The woman was remanded on continuing bail, with conditions not to contact any of the alleged victims.
She will return to court again in November.
Outside court she ran from the media, and declined to answer any questions about her alleged offending.
