One dead, three hurt in two crashes: Sunday traffic chaos on Dukes Hwy near Coonalpyn, Thiele Hwy, Eudunda
A 33-year-old man has died after a single-vehicle rollover on a major South Australian highway, marking the state’s 81st road death this year.
A 33-year-old Eudunda man has died after his ute rolled in the Mid North on Sunday evening.
Authorities rushed to the single car rollover on Thiele Highway, 4km southwest of Eudunda at 5.46pm on Sunday.
The driver and sole occupant of the Holden ute was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but later died.
Road closures were in place for several hours while Major Crash officers examined the scene, however, have since been lifted.
The crash occurred on a long stretch of road, just after a small bend where the speed limit is 100km/h, only a couple minutes drive from the town centre.
There was little evidence of the fatal crash on Monday morning with just a smashed windshield, tail light fragments and parts of construction tools on the side of the road.
Residents of Eudunda were rocked by news of the fatal accident.
Eudunda resident Sue Jessen, 75, said she heard sirens and saw the CFS drive through town.
“Everyone could hear what was going on,” Ms Jessen said.
“It’s a shame because we’ve had a couple other incidents around here in the past year.”
Another local, who didn’t want to be named, said the town would “band together and be here to support each other”.
The man’s death is the 81st life lost on South Australian roads this year.
Earlier on Sunday three men were injured after two trucks collided on the Dukes Highway, near Coonalpyn, southeast of Adelaide, at 10.30am on Sunday.
A 50-year-old man from Victoria received non life-threatening injuries and was taken to the local hospital.
The other truck driver, 29, and his passenger, 28, of Morphett Vale suffered minor injuries.
Traffic was restricted to one lane as debris was strewn across the road.
Police are investigating both crashes.
