Thousands of motorists are one step closer to seeing traffic ease on a major intersection in the southern suburbs, as part of a $30m upgrade.
The federal and state Labor governments announced on Sunday new traffic lights for Brighton Rd, Ocean Blvd and Scholefield Rd, aimed at helping to boost safety for road users, cyclists and pedestrians.
A new signalised crossing will also be installed at the intersection of Brighton Rd and Ocean Blvd, to help pedestrians and cyclists commute across the roads safely.
Around 30,000 vehicles commute through Ocean Blvd a day, while around 4,000 cars access Scholefield Rd everyday.
The upgrades will help local residents access arterial road networks in Seacliff, Kingston Park and Marino, which have become increasingly difficult and dangerous to access as traffic demand and new developments grow in the area.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tom Koutsantonis said the state government was committed to finding a solution for the local community who use the road as their “primary access point”.
“We know this intersection is already causing access issues due to traffic volumes and the Villawood and Seacliff developments currently underway will only add to that, particularly during peak hours,” Mr Koutsantonis said.
As design development continues throughout the year, construction is expected to start mid next year, and finish by late 2026 to early 2027.
The project is funded through the Brighton Road Intersection Improvements project, which has already placed new traffic lights at the intersection of Brighton Rd and Edwards Rd, with the state and federal government each contributing $15m.
Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said South Australians “deserve quality infrastructure”, after listening to the local community’s call for new traffic signals.
“Funding the intersection upgrade is an important investment in making sure people can get to where they want to go and home again safely,” Ms King said.
