Disappointed customers have found staff at Rundle Mall’s Reject Shop stripping the shelves bare as the discount store prepares to close down on January 16.

A notice behind the counters at the Adelaide CBD shop stated: “The Reject Shop Rundle Mall will be closing on Thursday 16 January.”

Many shelves in the store’s basement level had been stripped of products on Wednesday morning, as staff packed up stock.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused,” the notice continued. “We invite you to continue shopping at our Prospect or Greenacre stores.”

The notice also thanked “loyal customers” for their support over the past 27 years.

“It has been a pleasure to serve the Adelaide CBD community,” the notice said.

Regular customer Mansi Shah, who works in the public service at a nearby office, said she would genuinely miss the shop.

“Every lunch break, whenever I need something, I’ll rush here. If anybody is leaving work, I’ll come here for cards, bags and gifts,” she said.

“This is something pocket-friendly, I can come in and I don’t need to worry about spending too much.”

Another customer visited to search for tools, but left empty-handed after he was surprised to find many products missing from the shelves.

Bus driver Dylan Thorpe said the store’s closure was “a shame, for sure”.

In August last year, Inside Retail reported The Reject Shop’s net profit had dropped 35.9 per cent to $4.7 million, as sales grew 4.1 per cent to $852.7 million.

The Rundle Mall Reject Shop store manager referred questions to the retailer’s head office, which has been contacted for comment.
