A devastated pet owner has been left heartbroken after her dog was drowned by a kangaroo during a morning walk and is urging residents to keep an eye on their dogs around the native animal.

Southern suburbs resident and former real estate agent Raylene Main, 72, was walking her two boxers Logan and Lenny around the estuary in Port Noarlunga in the days leading up to Christmas last year when the dogs spotted some kangaroos by the water.

“I usually took them out at about 6.30 each morning, and they’d be off leash so they could run around,” Ms Main said.

“They saw some kangaroos, and while Lenny came back, two-year-old Logan went over the edge of the river and never came back.”

She said she looked for him for hours and even called in a friend with smart technology to help her.

“My friend had some drones, so we were searching in the air and by foot all day. It was heartbreaking. It was just really difficult not knowing.

“At about 4.30pm that afternoon, nearly 10 hours after he went missing, my friend found him in the water. He’d been drowned by the kangaroo.

“I had visions of him having been attacked and bleeding to death, but this was so different. It’s just something you don’t expect.”

Ms Main said her friend was chatting with a concerned local who was out in the area that afternoon who had experienced something far too similar.

“There was another person there, a local who said she’d lost her dog to a kangaroo drowning the year prior,” Ms Main said.

“I know of at least three of these incidents in the area.”

Ms Main is concerned residents walking their dogs in the area could be putting them at risk, as urban sprawl had forced a lot of the kangaroos to head further towards suburbia.

“They used to have acres and acres to roam on. Now with the new developments they’re just being pushed back and there’s so many more around.

“I just hope people are aware it can happen, and to keep an eye on your dogs when you’re around them.”

Just two months before the incident, footage of a man trying to save his dog from a kangaroo went viral on social media.

Uploaded by the Mildura Martial Arts school in Victoria, the video had been viewed more than 2.5 millions times on Tik Tok in just 10 hours.

It shows the ‘7ft kangaroo’ holding the videoers dog in the river, but thankfully he managed to escape unharmed.
