A grieving Eyre Peninsula family has turned their devastating loss into an urgent message of hope, as they farewell their beloved son and brother.

Port Lincoln family's powerful message after losing 29yo son to suicide

The family and loved ones of jokester and caring young man Kalon Holzer, who took his own life last month, said their final farewells on Friday.

Born and raised in Port Lincoln, moving further north to Lock later in life, the 29-year-old’s death left a tight-knit family distraught beyond words, looking for answers they will tragically never get.

Kalon died on September 10, but it was not until emergency services conducted a welfare check on his Eyre Peninsula home two days later that he was found. He lived alone.

His older sister, Cassandra Holzer, 30, spoke with police on September 12 when she discovered the tragic news of her brother’s passing.

In the week leading up to Kalon’s Port Lincoln funeral, his dad Chris, mum Christina, and siblings Brandon, Cassandra and Kiana took solace in the fact so many of the young man’s friends and people he touched through life had shared their support.

Wearing purple and yellow, in honour of Kalon’s favourite colours, Chris thanked all who knew and loved Kalon at his funeral on Friday.

“There are endless words I could use to describe Kalon, but he was one of a kind, unique and a humble soul,” he said.

“Kalon had a heart full of love for his family and he put them first no matter what.

“Watching you grow from a baby to a strong capable man is my greatest joy, but losing you was my greatest loss.

“A father isn’t supposed to be burying his son.”

Christina, Kalon’s mum, fondly remembered finding Kalon and his siblings play wrestling when they were younger.

“Jumping from the top bunk onto the mattress on the floor for a finishing move, they were epic and painful,” she said.

“Kalon left us on his terms, his way, let’s make this tragedy meaningful.

“Be kind to one another, reach out to someone, even if it’s just a friend or a stranger. A simple gesture or conversation. It can show you care and go a long way.”

Brandon, Cassandra and Kiana all shared loving memories of playing Warhammer 40K and painting figurines, dressing Kalon up in his sister’s clothes and makeup, and just how handsome he looked after his haircut.

“Forever young and forever my brother,” Brandon said, a sentiment shared in all the siblings’ eulogies.
