Police investigating after woman Laurel Floyd found dead in Christie Downs unit

The woman who died inside a Christie Downs unit has been identified. as an investigation into what led to her body being found on a balcony continues.

A woman was found by police and paramedics collapsed inside one of the units at a Christie Downs SA Housing Trust complex on Wednesday.

Laurel Floyd, 43, was found at the home on Rufus Cres at 10am on Wednesday.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

SA Police Southern District Police Commander Les Buckley said that officers were investigating the circumstances.

A post-mortem examination to determine the cause of Ms Floyd’s death would take at least a day to complete, police said.

It is understood Ms Floyd was in a domestic relationship with a man and lived with him in the unit.

Mr Buckley said that after police entered the property, the woman’s partner allegedly assaulted officers.

“When police arrived there was a male on the scene – a 54-year-old male – he became upset and as a result … the allegation is he assaulted police,” he said.

“He’s been arrested and he’s currently in the Christies Beach cells.”

The man has not been arrested in relation to the death, nor has he been charged with any wrongdoing. Investigators say that at this stage they do not know the woman’s cause of death.

Neighbour Krystal Wall said she was shocked to learn about the death.

“I’ll be contacting the Housing (Trust) to transfer because it’s not really that safe an area,” she said.

“This is a second death here in the last three or four years now.”

Another neighbour, Casey King, said that she had seen the woman throwing belongings over the balcony a few days ago.

She said she was sad to learn of her death.

Another neighbour described her as a “kind, helping person”.

Southern District CIB ­detectives and forensic officers examined the scene, and will continue conducting more investigations into Ms Floyd’s death.

The apartment complex, in the far southern suburbs, is in disrepair with broken windows, graffiti and rubbish strewn everywhere.

An overbearing odour pervaded the property when The Advertiser visited.

Police are urging anyone who saw or heard anything that may assist the investigation to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333000.
