SA Police reveal new details in North Adelaide death mystery

Police say they are still working to determine what happened before a man died after being found unconscious on a walking path just outside the CBD on Sunday morning.

At 7.45am on Sunday, police and paramedics were called to a walking path between Brougham Pl and King William Rd in North Adelaide after reports a man had collapsed.

The man was unresponsive when police officers arrive, and despite CPR from paramedics, he died in hospital.

Eastern District Detectives spent the afternoon on the scene, along with other police patrols and multiple SES volunteers, but have since revealed he was a 54-year-old man from Marden who was known to walk that route every morning.

Speaking to media in front of a large area cordoned off for investigations, Detective Inspector Fraser Huntley, Officer in Charge of Eastern Adelaide Criminal Investigation Branch, said the man had left on his usual walk from Walkerville around North Adelaide before his death.

“We know he was found collapsed at about 7.35am in the garden by three members of the public,” he said.

“We are asking for anyone on O’Connell St, Brougham Pl or Brougham Gardens between the hours of 6am and 8am to contact police.

“At this stage, until we have a post mortem tomorrow, it’s an unexplained death.”

He said SES were on scene to “see if there were any items of interest” in relation to his death.

He also said there was no indication any weapons were involved.

Earlier in the afternoon, witnesses visiting from Melbourne told The Advertiser they saw multiple people standing around someone who was lying on the ground when they walked past just before 8am this morning.

“There was someone getting CPR for a while,” they said. “Lots of police.”

Multiple SES trucks have arrived at the scene, but police are yet to confirm what they believe has happened. Hundreds of shocked Crows fans are walking past the scene on their way out of Adelaide Oval.

As of 3pm, multiple SES officers are out searching the exact spot where the man’s body was found. SA Police are expected to give more detail at a 4pm press conference.

Crime Scene Investigators and several other police officers are currently searching the area.

At this stage, it is not known if the death is suspicious or not.

Anyone who was in the area early on Sunday morning who might have noticed anything suspicious is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
