An emergency services worker has died in a shooting incident near a popular Adelaide suburban lookout.

Police and paramedics were called to Outer Harbor just before 5.45pm on Monday, amid reports of a firearms incident.

Despite desperate attempts from SA Ambulance officers and MedStar emergency responders, the unidentified man died at the scene.

It is understood he was a member of the state’s emergency services, who was believed to have been off-duty at the time.

No details about the victim have been released.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which occurred near the Outer Harbor lookout adjacent to Lady Ruthven Reserve and near the cruise liner passenger terminal.

Shocked locals are believed to have witnessed the shooting which is being treated as non-suspicious.

It comes after a female police officer was found dead at the nearby Port Adelaide Police Station in January.

The incidents are not connected.

Local Vicky Summerton, who owns a nearby hair salon, said she drove to her work at 6.30pm and saw emergency services at the scene.

“It’s tragic,” she said. “I just thought someone … had an accident or heart attack because someone had an accident on the rocks a little while back.”

Lincoln Johnstone, who lives a few hundred metres away, said it was “confronting”.

“It’s a tragedy, it’s a really quiet neighbourhood,” he said,

Mr Johnstone said he had an emergency services friend who often spoke about how “taxing” their job could be.

“He had access to a lot of support from what I can tell but … they need that support because they’re with us during our lowest moments, and that sort of stuff,” he said.

“It is definitely paramount to their safety.”

Paul Sivewright, a mechanic who lives a street away, also expressed his shock.

“It’s very sad,” he said.

SA Police declined to comment last night. An SA Ambulance spokeswoman referred inquiries to police. A report is expected to be prepared for the coroner.
