Nicholas Conway jailed for holding a woman hostage and assaulting her

A “delusional” man who bashed an alleged pervert in custody has been jailed again after he held a woman hostage – and bragged about it to his mum.

A “delusional” man has been jailed after he restrained a woman with duct tape before bashing her with a club in a terrifying hostage ordeal.

Nicholas Alexander Francis Conway, 40, left the victim fearing she would be killed because of his unfounded belief she was assisting pedophiles.

During sentencing, the District Court heard the victim attended Conway’s Flinders Park address on February 4, 2020 where they consumed methamphetamine.

Later in the evening, Conway became “agitated, angry and delusional”.

“You accused the victim of recording you and being involved with pedophiles. That was not true,” Judge Michael Burnett said.

Conway then used a stick or club to hit the victim a few times to the head, which left her with severe bruising consistent with significant blunt force trauma.

He then held the victim down and put duct tape around her wrist, the bottom of her legs and over her mouth.

The court heard the victim was restrained for some hours over the night, although it was not determined exactly how long.

Conway then withdrew $120 from the victim’s bank account a few days later after he verbally compelled her to hand over her bank card and pin number.

The Flinders Park father pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and false imprisonment.

A victim impact statement was previously read to the court by a prosecutor.

“Nick’s violence shocked and scared me … as the violence went on I worried I wouldn’t get out of there alive, I worried he would eventually kill me,” the victim said.

The victim said she had been left hurt, degraded and repulsed by Conway.

“I’ve come to realise that you are nothing more than an unremorseful, weak, lying, self-important prick of a human being that deserves the full punishment the law is able to provide to you,” she said.

Conway was also previously jailed for bashing an alleged pervert while in custody on these charges.

During sentencing last year, the court heard he was placed into a cell with the victim who told him he was in custody for possessing child exploitation material.

Judge Anthony Allen said this revelation caused Conway to become enraged.

“You showed the victim tattoos on your knuckles, explaining to the victim that those tattoos signified ‘brotherhood of like-minded individuals out to get pedophiles’,” he said.

Conway punched the victim to the right side of his head, before kicking him to the left leg and punching him again to the right eye socket.

Judge Burnett said the new offending was clearly a terrifying ordeal for the victim.

“You did not initially show any remorse saying to your mother that the beating was not horrific but enjoyable,” he said.

Conway was sentenced to four years jail, with a non-parole period of two years and five months.

The sentence was backdated to February 4, 2022.
