A top Adelaide private girls’ school will build a new $34m primary school campus.
St Aloysius College, in the CBD, already broke ground on the project, which they call a “vertical primary school” with 22 classrooms over four levels.
The build will include a hi-tech STEM classroom, music room and a 25m swimming pool.
Students will also be able to make use of a rooftop playspace with views across St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral and Victoria Square, garden and sensory rooms.
St Aloysius College principal Paddy McEvoy said the new development would support teachers “to create an exceptional learning environment”.
“Our students and teachers have been involved in every step of the design process,” Ms McEvoy said.
“The result is a modern and flexible building which includes shared learning commons and quiet areas to promote student agency in how and where they learn best.”
The project will be built by construction company Schiavello and co-designed by Grieve Gillet Architects and Hayball.
Ms McEvoy said school leadership was “impressed with their depth of experience in vertical primary schools as well as the strong representation of female architects within their teams”.
“For generations, St Aloysius College has supported the development of confident and compassionate young women, taking advantage of a diversity of learning experiences with the city on our doorstep,” she said.
Once complete, the build will be the tallest primary school in the CBD.
The new building will be named after Sister Teresa Dunlevie, who was the school’s headmistress from 1918 to 1944 and oversaw a period of growth.
St Aloysius College was established 145 years ago and has more than 1100 enrolments from reception to year 12.
