She was saving for her retirement – but that’s on hold after her award-winning dog business was booted for a new KFC minutes from another one.

An award-winning dog groomer says she’s been “forced out at her own expense” after being blindsided by plans to replace her long-running Morphett Vale business with a new KFC outlet.

Documents submitted to Plan SA reveal the fast-food restaurant would be built at 163 Main South Rd – where City Slickers Dog Grooming and Daycare has become a community staple.

Owner Narelle O’Dwyer said she had been forced to postpone her retirement as she looked for another location to “build it all back up again”.

“I’ve been forced out – and I just feel really resentful that the money I’ve been saving for my retirement is now going to go into having to relocate and build it all back up again,” Ms O’Dwyer, 54, said.

“There’s already a KFC a minute up the road – and I don’t know how much more KFC people need to eat, but there’s plenty of other takeaway places just within a stone’s throw from here anyway.

“I’ve been at this location for ten years, and I’ve owned the shop for 25. I mean, it’s what I’ve done since I was 19 years old and I’m now 54 – I’m not in a position to just go ‘okay, we’ll just shut the doors and I’ll do something else’, because I don’t have anything else to do.

“I’m just getting in the car now to drive around to see if I can find anything that’s not been advertised online – that’s up for rent and fits within my budget.”

Ms O’Dwyer said she had only been notified by her landlord – the owner of next-door’s Clipboard Officer & Art Supplies – “just a few months ago”, after he said he had been approached by developers.

Artist impressions from Nielsen Architects show a sleek modern design for the building’s exterior with a single-lane drive thru and 20 carparks. Landscaping would account for about 15 per cent of the 2100sq m site.

It would become the second KFC on the busy main road, with KFC Reynella just a short six-minute drive away.

Submissions on the proposal are open to the public until Friday, May 23.

The Advertiser contacted the developers for comment.
