Mario Athinodorou: Former Adelaide doctor struck off for sexual misconduct dies in Indonesia

A former Adelaide GP who was banned from practising medicine for sexual misconduct has died overseas.

A former Adelaide GP who was struck off the medical register for repeated sexual misconduct against a number of female patients has died in Indonesia.

Bali police on Wednesday confirmed the death of Mario Athinodorou, which reportedly occurred on the island of Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara province on July 28.

The Advertiser understands he was there on holiday.

Athinodorou, was banned from practising for 13 years after a tribunal found he had breached professional medical boundaries while treating 10 women at the Harbour Medical Services’ North Haven surgery over a period of at least 15 years.

At the time, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) said the 13 year ban was “one of the highest ever for a health practitioner”.

He had also been prohibited from providing other health-related services, including massage, to female patients for the period of the ban.

Documents seen by The Advertiser in 2018 said the women were inappropriately touched, groped, kissed on the lips, hugged, made to undress or pestered for check-ups.

The married father of four from Woodville South had denied “taking advantage” of the victims in 2018.

The 2018 hearing came almost two years after he admitted committing aggravated indecent assault of three female patients.

Athinodorou’s body is understood to have been taken to a funeral home in Denpasar.
