Adelaide United young gun Josh Cavallo was one of three Reds players who missed Saturday night’s home game after contracting Covid-19.
Rising star Mohamed Toure and goalkeeper Joe Gauci also missed the game against Wellington Phoenix at Hindmarsh Stadium.
It is understood Cavallo, 22, contracted Covid before Christmas and has since recovered.
He was last night seen in the stands watching the game after failing a fitness test.
Officals expect him to return for the away game on Wednesday against Melbourne City at AAMI Park.
“Mohamed Toure and Joe Gauci both tested positive for Covid later in the week,” the club tweeted at 6.54pm last night, ahead of the game’s 7.15pm kickoff.
“Both are feeling OK and don’t have symptoms. Ben Halloran is unavailable and Josh Cavallo has general soreness and is a cautionary out.”
In October last year, Cavallo became the world’s first top-flight professional soccer player to come out as gay while still playing.
He was feted worldwide for his courage.
The Reds are the latest South Australian sporting club to be hit by Covid.
Two members of the Adelaide Crows AFLW program – not players – were forced to isolate at home after they tested positive on Monday.
It was also revealed early last week that a member of the Crows’ men’s team has also tested positive but has not been identified.
Port Adelaide on Wednesday confirmed that one of its players, also unidentified, was also isolating after testing positive.
“He is fully vaccinated and experiencing mild symptoms. We expect the player to join the playing group when training resumes on January 10,” Port Adelaide said.
The Adelaide 36ers had their December 28 home game against Perth postponed after one of the Sixers contracted Covid.
Sunday’s game against the South East Melbourne Phoenix was also put on hold.
South Australian Ashes star Travis Head was ruled out of the coming Sydney test due to Covid and is isolating in a Melbourne hotel room.
Head is expected to be back for the fifth Test, the first ever Ashes clash to be played in Hobart.
