A man has died after being struck by lightning near Morgan in the Riverland, SA Police announced on Saturday night.

It is understood two brothers were swimming in a private dam, near Eba, when lightning struck the water.

A 29-year-old man was killed by the strike, which occurred at about 5pm.

It is believed the pair were visiting and not from the area.

Locals at the nearby riverside town of Morgan have been left shocked by the news a man had died on Sunday morning.

One man, who did not wish to be named, said storms had been frequent in the area over recent weeks.

“We get them a lot out here, it’s not unusual,” he said.

Emergency services were called to a rural property at Eba, 10km east of Morgan, about 5pm on Saturday.

The man died at the scene.

Police are preparing a report for the Coroner.

The Bureau of Meteorology had issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 4.45pm.

“It’s a very tragic accident to occur in our region,” Mid-Murray Council mayor Dave Burgess said.

“I express my condolences to the family and friends of the man.”
