At-risk children aged under five can be vaccinated against Covid-19 from Monday, September 5.

Babies and young children with certain medical conditions will now be able to receive a paediatric dose of the Moderna vaccine, under new national guidelines.

About 5000 South Australian children will be eligible for the vaccine, including those who are immunocompromised, have a disability, or complex or multiple health conditions.

Two doses of the vaccine eight weeks apart are recommended, but parents should wait for three months if their child has had Covid.

The vaccine is available at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, participating GPs, Commonwealth vaccination clinics and some regional SA Health clinics, including one on Kangaroo Island this week.

The vaccine rollout comes as data shows 44 per cent of eligible South Australian children aged five to 11 are now double dosed.

Health Minister Chris Picton said by expanding the vaccine rollout it will help protect our most vulnerable children and babies.

“I encourage parents who have kids with more acute needs to talk to their GP and see if their child is eligible to keep their families and the community safe,” he said.

The state of emergency has been lifted in South Australia, after a record 793 days of the pandemic.

The Emergency Declaration was lifted on May 24, and mask rules scrapped for schools the same day.

Masks are still required in public transport and high risk settings, like aged-care homes and health clinics.
