A southern suburbs man has been identified as the man accused of causing a horrific crash on Victor Harbor Rd last year, after a vehicle crossed onto the incorrect side of the road and collided head-on with a car containing two young women and a seven-year-old boy.

Christopher Michael Hocking, 46, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court for the first time on Tuesday – charged over the near-fatal Mt Jagged crash in July which left a woman, 26, fighting for life.

Mr Hocking, of Port Noarlunga South, is yet to enter any pleas to one count of cause serious harm by dangerous driving and five counts of cause harm by dangerous driving.

On Tuesday, before Magistrate Simon Smart, prosecution told the court they would be “proceeding on all six counts”.

Defence counsel for Mr Hocking told Mr Smart he had only received the information from prosecution in mid-December, and was seeking an adjournment because he hadn’t yet had an opportunity to take instructions from his client.

“We’re still making our way through the full brief,” he said.

Mr Hocking was arrested in July after police alleged he was driving a Mitsubishi ute that was travelling north on Victor Harbor Rd, before it crossed to the incorrect side of the road and collided head-on with a silver Subaru sedan.

The driver of the Subaru sedan, a 26-year-old Tooperang woman, was flown to hospital in a critical condition. Her passengers – a 26-year-old woman and a seven-year-old boy – were also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Mr Hocking and his passengers – a 43-year-old woman, a 12-year-old boy and a 10-year-old boy – were all treated in hospital before being released.

The alleged victims of the crash were present in court on Tuesday; with one sustaining facial scarring and a permanent stent in their heart as a result of the crash.

Mr Smart remanded Mr Hocking on continuing bail and adjourned the matter until next month.
