This former property tycoon was once at the top of Adelaide’s real estate scene – now she’s offered a magistrate a “solemn sorry” in court.

A former multi-millionaire who became bankrupt has pleaded guilty to twice breaching her bail conditions in 2023 and 2024, telling a magistrate she has no one else to blame but herself.

Cathy Jane Hogben, 51, from Mount Jagged, appeared in Christies Beach Magistrates Court on Tuesday in front of Magistrate David McLeod charged with dishonest dealings with documents, breaches of bail and a number of driving offences.

Adam Richards, for Ms Hogben, told the court the matters were “very embarrassing” for his client.

“She was dealing with a serious illness of her mother she was caring for and major business problems as well at the same time,” Mr Richards said.

“Yet, her instructions to me were quote, no one to blame but myself. Let’s just say a solemn sorry will be sung.”

Ms Hogben – formerly known as Cathy Jayne Pearce, Staker and Britten – was a BRW rich-lister and property tycoon in the 2000s, prior to her businesses going bankrupt.

On September 16, Ms Hogben was arrested on a warrant after failing to attend court while on bail for driving under disqualification or suspension – which was originally charged in 2021.

Ms Hogben is yet to enter any pleas to a number of charges including dishonestly dealing with documents at Brighton in October 2021, and driving at night, with excess blood alcohol, and in contravention of a learner’s permit the same year.

Her counsel asked on Tuesday for those matters to be listed for trial.

Earlier this month, Ms Hogben cried in relief after learning she would be released on bail after spending 10 days in custody for missing court over unlicensed driving charges.

She will return to court in December.
