A dog walker in the northern suburbs has been spotted committing a bizarre theft from a garden bed on Wednesday night.

At around 6pm, Zoe Franklin’s motion-activated camera picked up a woman walking her dog past the front of her home and car.

The video shows the woman putting a light in her mouth, before bending over a pulling a plant out of the ground and walking off.

Ms Franklin told The Advertiser she had moved into the rental property two weeks ago, and the plant had been added to the garden before they moved in.

“I don’t even know how to explain it to the real estate agent that a plant has been stolen,” Ms Franklin said. “Welcome to the neighbourhood.”

She said watching the video after the theft had occurred left her feeling “pretty pissed”.

“My partner is livid,” she wrote.

Ms Franklin posted the video to social media later that night and was shocked to hear other people had plants stolen from their gardens as well.

Beverly Thompson wrote she’d recently had three plants taken from her yard.

Troy James commented that a woman brought shears to his rose bush when he was outside pruning them.

“She didn't realise I was outside pruning them at the time and I gave her quite a shock when I said, ‘all you have to do is ask’. she bolted after that,” Mr James wrote.

But some found humour in the “bizarre” incident.

One commenter thanked Ms Franklin for posting the video online, writing “that was my entertainment for the night so thanks lol. Keep your chin up.”

Another joked the thief might have mistaken the plant for a “money tree”.

It comes months after a brazen thief stole ornamental Christmas lights from a Salisbury garden.
